Tackee David’s Split Pea with Ham

Description

A delicious and hearty good-for-winter soup. This is the kind of soup where just about anything works.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound dried split peas
  • 8 cups water
  • 1 meaty ham bone
  • 1 cup chopped onion
  • ¼ teaspoon dried marjoram leaves, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon dried thyme leaves, crushed
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • 1 cup chopped celery
  • ½ teaspoon salt, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Place the peas and water into a large soup pot over medium heat; bring to a boil
  2. boil for 2 minutes
  3. and set aside off the heat to cool for 1 hour.
  4. Place the ham bone into the pot with the peas
  5. and stir in onion
  6. marjoram
  7. thyme
  8. garlic powder
  9. and salt; bring to a boil over medium heat
  10. reduce heat to a simmer
  11. cover the pot
  12. and simmer for 2 hours
  13. stirring occasionally. Remove the ham bone
  14. and cut as much ham as possible from the bone; chop the ham
  15. and return to the soup. Stir in celery. Discard ham bone. Bring soup back to a simmer
  16. and cook for 45 more minutes
  17. stirring occasionally. Season to taste with salt.

Total Time: 4 hrs 5 mins
