Sourdough Chocolate Cake

Description

This cake recipe uses sourdough starter in the batter for a uniquely delicious cake with a strong milk chocolate flavor.

Ingredients

  • ⅔ cup shortening
  • 1 ⅔ cups white sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
  • ⅔ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 cup sourdough starter
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup cold water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch cake pan.
  2. Sift together flour
  3. cocoa
  4. baking soda
  5. baking powder
  6. and salt.
  7. Cream shortening
  8. sugar
  9. and eggs together in a large bowl. Blend in sourdough starter. Add flour mixture slowly to creamed mixture
  10. beating until smooth. Stir in water and vanilla; mix well. Pour batter into the prepared pan.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean
  12. about 35 minutes.
