Egyptian Lahma Bil Basal (Beef in Rich Onion Sauce)

Description

This is AMAZING! Very popular, simple dish made in Egyptian households. Once you make it, it will become a favorite for sure. When finished, you should have super tender beef with a thick oniony sauce. The onions will have cooked down to a thick rich sauce.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound cubed beef stew meat
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 tablespoon canola oil
  • 4 onions, very thinly sliced
  • 2 cubes chicken bouillon
  • 1 bay leaf
  • salt and ground black pepper to taste
  • 1 ½ cups water, or as needed

Instructions

  1. Combine beef
  2. butter
  3. and canola in a large saucepan; cook and stir beef over medium heat until lightly browned
  4. about 5 minutes. Add onions
  5. chicken bouillon
  6. bay leaf
  7. salt
  8. and pepper to beef; pour in water. Reduce heat to low
  9. cover
  10. and simmer until beef is tender and onions have reduced into a thick sauce
  11. at least 2 hours.
