Classic Goulash

Description

Easy recipe for making a classic goulash. Can also be done in a slow cooker. Inspired by Paula Deen’s Bobby’s Goulash.

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds lean ground beef
  • 2 large yellow onions, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, chopped
  • 3 cups water
  • 2 (15 ounce) cans tomato sauce
  • 2 (14.5 ounce) cans diced tomatoes
  • 3 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons dried Italian herb seasoning
  • 3 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon seasoned salt, or to taste
  • 2 cups uncooked elbow macaroni

Instructions

  1. Cook and stir the ground beef in a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat
  2. breaking the meat up as it cooks
  3. until the meat is no longer pink and has started to brown
  4. about 10 minutes. Skim off excess fat
  5. and stir in the onions and garlic. Cook and stir the meat mixture until the onions are translucent
  6. about 10 more minutes.
  7. Stir water
  8. tomato sauce
  9. diced tomatoes
  10. soy sauce
  11. Italian seasoning
  12. bay leaves
  13. and seasoned salt into the meat mixture and bring to a boil over medium heat. Reduce heat to low
  14. cover
  15. and simmer 20 minutes
  16. stirring occasionally.
  17. Stir macaroni into the mixture
  18. cover
  19. and simmer over low heat until the pasta is tender
  20. about 25 minutes
  21. stirring occasionally. Remove from heat
  22. discard bay leaves
  23. and serve.
