A Minnesotan’s Beef and Macaroni Hotdish

Description

My grandpa’s recipe. Old-school and traditional Minnesota staple.

Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 2 cups elbow macaroni
  • ½ large green bell pepper, coarsely chopped
  • ½ large onion, chopped
  • 1 (16 ounce) can tomato sauce
  • 1 pound tomatoes, coarsely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ¾ teaspoon dried basil
  • ¾ teaspoon dried oregano
  • ½ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon hot pepper sauce (such as Tabasco®)
  • 1 cup beef broth

Instructions

  1. Cook beef in large skillet over medium heat
  2. stirring occasionally
  3. until browned
  4. about 5 minutes. Transfer beef to a bowl.
  5. Cook macaroni
  6. bell pepper
  7. and onion in the same skillet over medium heat for 3 minutes. Add cooked beef
  8. tomato sauce
  9. tomatoes
  10. Worcestershire sauce
  11. soy sauce
  12. salt
  13. basil
  14. oregano
  15. ground black pepper
  16. chili powder
  17. garlic powder
  18. and hot pepper sauce. Pour in beef broth. Cover skillet and simmer until macaroni is tender
  19. about 15 minutes. Remove lid and simmer
  20. stirring occasionally
  21. until thickened
  22. 5 to 10 minutes.

Cook Time: 25 mins

Total Time: 40 mins
