Description

This is a very popular German cake recipe with cherries, vanilla custard, and chocolate! The Donau is a river, and Welle is the German word for wave.

Ingredients

  • 1 ⅛ cups butter, room temperature
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 5 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon baking soda
  • ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1 (20 ounce) can pitted sour cherries
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 ½ teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 ⅓ cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
