Uncle Frank’s Italian “S” Cookies

Description

This cookie has been a tradition for several generations in my Sicilian family. Our Uncle Frank always made them for us. They are thought to be a Christmas cookie, but he would make them all year long. Sometimes instead of sprinkles he would top them with sesame seeds.

Ingredients

  • 4 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup white sugar, or more to taste
  • 1 cup shortening (such as Crisco®)
  • ¼ cup milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon almond extract

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Line a cookie sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix flour
  3. sugar
  4. shortening
  5. milk
  6. eggs
  7. baking powder
  8. and almond extract in a bowl by hand until smooth.
  9. Form dough into a 1-inch thick log. Cut small portions and roll into 3-inch long pieces
  10. then shape into “S” shapes. Place on the prepared cookie sheet.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven until edges are golden
  12. 10 to 15 minutes. Cool on the baking sheet briefly before removing to a wire rack to cool completely.
