Nut and Fruit Bread

Description

This is another great holiday bread to make that belonged to my mother. She sometimes served this one, and it is a very old recipe. This bread is good the first day, but better the second. You may use dates instead of raisins if you wish.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 4 teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup white sugar
  • ¾ cup chopped walnuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Grease an 8×5-inch loaf pan.
  2. Beat egg in a small bowl. Mix in milk and melted butter; set aside.
  3. Sift flour
  4. baking powder
  5. and salt into a large bowl. Add raisins
  6. walnuts
  7. sugar
  8. and orange zest; mix well. Blend in egg mixture until flour is just moistened. Transfer batter to the prepared pan and allow to rest for 20 minutes.
  9. Bake in the preheated oven until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean
  10. 55 to 60 minutes. Turn bread out onto a wire rack and cool for several hours before slicing.
