Mom’s Traditional Creamed Onions

Ingredients

  • 1 cup pearl onions
  • 4 cups water
  • 6 tablespoons butter
  • 6 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 3 cups milk
  • 1 pinch salt to taste
  • 1 pinch ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Pour water into a medium pot and bring to a boil; add onions and cook until tender. Drain in a colander
  2. reserving cooking liquid; set onions aside.
  3. Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat; whisk in flour to make a paste. Stir milk into reserved cooking water; add milk mixture slowly to the saucepan

  5. and cook until thickened. Season with salt and pepper; stir in onions and transfer to a serving dish.
