New York Spiedies

Description

The Spiedie is a New York original, created in Binghamton. Spiedie meat is grilled on wooden skewers then served, skewer and all, on a fat slice of French bread. Wrap the bread around the meat, pull out the skewer and enjoy!

Ingredients

  • 1 cup canola oil
  • ¼ cup white vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice
  • 1 clove garlic, chopped
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried basil
  • 1 ½ teaspoons dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • ½ teaspoon dried parsley
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • 2 bay leaves
  • ½ teaspoon kosher salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 8 wooden skewers, soaked in water for 15 minutes
  • 2 pounds cubed beef
  • 8 (1 inch thick) slices French bread

Instructions

  1. In a large resealable bag
  2. combine canola oil
  3. vinegar
  4. lemon juice
  5. garlic
  6. basil
  7. oregano
  8. thyme
  9. parsley
  10. onion powder
  11. bay leaves
  12. salt
  13. and pepper. Place beef cubes into marinade
  14. seal the bag
  15. and shake to coat beef. Marinate in the refrigerator overnight
  16. or for up to 3 days.
  17. Preheat an outdoor grill for medium heat. Thread beef cubes onto 8 skewers
  18. dividing evenly. Discard marinade.
  19. Cook beef skewers on the grill for 15 to 20 minutes
  20. or until cooked to your liking. To serve
  21. place a whole skewer of beef on a slice of French bread. Hold onto beef using bread
  22. and pull the skewer out.
