My Grandma’s Shoo-Fly Pie

Description

Classic Pennsylvania Dutch recipe. Grandma’s loving attention not included!

Ingredients

  • 1 (9 inch) pie shell
  • 1 cup molasses
  • ¾ cup hot water
  • ¾ teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ¼ cup shortening

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
  2. Combine molasses
  3. hot water
  4. and baking soda together in a medium bowl; whisk in beaten egg until well combined. Pour mixture into pie shell.
  5. Combine flour and brown sugar in a separate medium bowl; cut in shortening until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Sprinkle on top of pie filling.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Lower temperature to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C); bake for an additional 30 minutes.
