Shrimp and Scallop Chowder

  • ¼ cup butter, divided
  • 1 small sweet onion (such as Vidalia®), diced
  • 1 thick slice honey ham, diced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 potatoes, peeled and cut into bite-size pieces
  • ¼ teaspoon salt, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper, or to taste
  • ½ pound uncooked medium shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • ½ pound small sea scallops
  • 1 (10 ounce) can sweet corn, drained
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, or to taste
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder, or to taste
