Nina Scardino Corolla’s Sardine Bread from Gwen Corolla

Nena Scardino Corolla was my grandmother. She always made this dish at Christmas along with Italian sausage and little fig tarts she called Figulottes. One year I got to help her and Grandaddy make Pignulata. That is a really fun thing to do with kids helping.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil, or as needed
  • 1 (16 ounce) package hot roll mix (such as Pillsbury®)
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 (3.75 ounce) can sardines packed in oil, drained and crumbled
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic, or more to taste
  • ¼ cup grated Parmesan cheese, or more to taste
